ALA and YALSA have teamed up in this great grant offering a book discussion for troubled teens. A scholar helps to lead the discussion. We teamed up with our local probation department.

Together-a book talk for kids and parents

With the NY State Council on the Humanities and NYLA, the program offers a forum for parents and kids ages 9-11 to come together to talk about books and ideas at their local library. Humanities scholar required; scholar stipend, program money for your library and the books are all provided by the grant.

Wal-Mart Foundation

Wal-Mart is a great place to get money and other stuff. They donated a bicycle to us for summer reading program. They donate money for community programs if you fill out an application. They vote on applications at certain times of the year; so it’s best to get your request in early. Their employees also get paid to volunteer to do things like read stories to kids. www.walmart.com

Lowe’s Foundation

Lowe’s offers programs that have to do with nature and horticulture. If you have an active garden club in your community and you want to partner with them, think about looking up this grant. You have to have a local store in your community to be eligible. www.lowes.com

Poets and Writers Grant

This grant is a good one for getting authors or poets who can work with kids or adults to your library. New York state is one of a handful of eligible states that can apply for this grant. They have a directory of people who can do a program and you can search by age and subject material. You can also apply for someone who isn’t in their directory to get this grant. One criteria-they have to be a scholar and a published author or poet. www.pw.org

Walgreens foundation

Walgreens provides money for medical programs. If you want to have a program on juvenile diabetes, let’s say, you can apply for this grant. You need to have a Walgreens in your community to be eligible for this grant.

If you want a nutrition program for your library, this would be one to consider. www.walgreens.com

Poets In Person

From Chicago, this grant will allow you to form an adult group and have a poetry series on established published poets. They choose the poets for you and your library will get a permanent collection of their CD’s. You must choose a scholar to lead the discussions, and they must submit a resume.

This can be a very enjoyable adult series. Paid training for the scholar and facilitator in Albany, NY is provided. The only thing you will have to pay for is the refreshments for each sesssion. You may be surprised by what people in your community may contribute to each discussion. This grant is a bit detailed, but pretty easy once you have all the information they need. Not sure if this grant is still around, but it was a good one.

This is a very good grant,and I have gotten it 3 times. You apply through “Lettuce Feed You” in Watertown. Bonnie Corbin is the contact person.

They usually fund in January and July, so plan accordingly.

Target Early Childhood Reading Grants
